What is a system bet?

A system is a combination bet that groups several selections into a set of accumulators of a fixed size. Unlike a regular accumulator, a system does not need every selection to win for you to receive a payout: at least one winning combination is enough. A payout includes the returned stake and does not necessarily mean an overall profit.

For example, a “2 out of 3” system includes three selections and creates three accumulators with two selections each. If at least two of the three selections win, at least one accumulator wins and the bettor receives a payout.

The total stake is divided equally between all combinations. If you stake 3000 units on a “2 out of 3” system, each of the three accumulators receives 1000 units.

2 out of 3, 3 out of 4, or 3 out of 5: which system should you choose?

Choosing a system type involves balancing risk and potential returns. Consider a stake of 3000 units with illustrative odds of 1.80 for each selection.

2 out of 3 system — 3 combinations at 1000 units each. It allows 1 losing selection while still paying out. If 2 out of 3 win at odds of 1.80, one accumulator returns 1000 × 3.24 = 3240 units. Profit: +240 units. In these examples, it needs the fewest winning selections but gives the smallest profit at that threshold.

3 out of 4 system — 4 combinations at 750 units each. It allows 1 losing selection while still paying out. With 3 winners, one accumulator returns 750 × 5.832 = 4374 units. Profit: +1374 units. Its suitability depends on the selections and their odds.

3 out of 5 system — 10 combinations at 300 units each. It allows 2 losing selections while still paying out. With 3 winners, one combination returns 300 × 5.832 = 1749.60 units. A total payout of 1749.60 units against a stake of 3000 units means a loss. At these odds, at least 4 out of 5 must win for a profit. It can be considered when you have doubts about two selections, but a payout may still leave an overall loss.

Types of system bets

A system type is written as “K out of N”, where N is the total number of selections and K is the size of each accumulator (the number of selections in one combination). The number of combinations is given by the binomial coefficient C(N, K).

SystemSelectionsAccumulator sizeCombinationsMinimum winners for a payout
2 out of 33232
2 out of 44262
3 out of 44343
2 out of 552102
3 out of 553103
4 out of 55454
2 out of 662152
3 out of 663203

A smaller K relative to N means fewer winners are needed for a payout, but does not always mean more combinations. When there are more combinations, the stake is split between more accumulators, reducing the stake on each one. A winning combination does not guarantee an overall profit.

System bet calculation example

Suppose you stake 3000 units on a “2 out of 3” system with the following selections:

  • Selection 1: Fonbet, odds of 1.80 — won
  • Selection 2: odds of 2.10 — won
  • Selection 3: odds of 1.65 — lost

The “2 out of 3” system creates 3 accumulators, each receiving 1000 units:

Accumulator 1 (Selections 1+2): 1.80 × 2.10 = 3.78 → Payout: 1000 × 3.78 = 3780 units

Accumulator 2 (Selections 1+3): 1.80 × 1.65 = 2.97 → Selection 3 lost → 0 units

Accumulator 3 (Selections 2+3): 2.10 × 1.65 = 3.465 → Selection 3 lost → 0 units

Total payout: 3780 units. Profit: 3780 − 3000 = +780 units

If you had placed the same 3000 units on a regular accumulator, the entire stake would have been lost because of the third selection. In this example, the system still produced a payout and a profit.

What is a system bet in football? An RPL match example

Consider this hypothetical example: three Russian Premier League (RPL) matches, a 2 out of 3 system, and a stake of 3000 units:

Zenit — Lokomotiv: home win (1) at odds of 1.75 (won). Spartak — Dynamo: home win (1) at odds of 2.20 (won). Krasnodar — CSKA: home win (1) at odds of 1.90 (lost).

Combination 1 (Zenit + Spartak): 1.75 × 2.20 = 3.85 → 1000 × 3.85 = 3850 units ✓

Combination 2 (Zenit + Krasnodar): lost → 0 units ✗

Combination 3 (Spartak + Krasnodar): lost → 0 units ✗

Payout: 3850 units. Profit: 3850 − 3000 = +850 units

An accumulator on all three matches would have returned 0 units after Krasnodar failed to win. The system produced a profit of +850 units through the winning combination.

System bet vs accumulator

Both systems and accumulators are combination bets, but they work differently:

FeatureAccumulatorSystem
All selections must winYesNo — K out of N are enough for a payout
Potential payout when all selections winHigherLower (the stake is split between combinations)
Risk of losing the entire stakeHigher, other things being equalLower, other things being equal
Bookmaker marginCompounds across all selectionsCompounds within the smaller accumulators

The choice between a system and an accumulator depends on your strategy. A system can suit situations where you want to reduce the risk of losing the entire stake and allow for one or two selections to lose. For more on strategies, see the Betting Wiki section.

System bets at Fonbet, Winline, and Liga Stavok: features

Fonbet, Winline, and Liga Stavok offer system bets in Russia, but their interfaces and limits differ. At Fonbet, choose “System” in the bet slip and specify the accumulator size; the maximum is 16 selections. Winline lists systems with up to 20 selections, subject to the available system types. Liga Stavok allows up to 16 selections, subject to its combination limit.

Note that the minimum stake for a system depends on the bookmaker and the number of combinations. It can be higher than for a single or an accumulator: the stake is divided between combinations, and a small total stake can leave too little on each accumulator.

The probability of a system making a profit depends on the win probability and odds of each selection. Across 100 “2 out of 3” systems, results may vary less than for accumulators on the same selections, but this is not guaranteed by the number of bets: some combinations pay out even with one losing selection. With favourites, losing the entire stake may be less likely than with underdogs, but profitability also depends on the odds. Manage your bankroll: the loss on a completely losing system equals the full stake.

Frequently asked questions about system bets
🙋 What is a system bet in simple terms?
💁 A system is a set of accumulators made from your chosen selections. You specify several selections and an accumulator size, and the bookmaker automatically creates every possible combination of that size. Not every selection needs to win: some winning combinations are enough for a payout, though not necessarily for an overall profit.
🙋 How do you calculate a system bet’s payout?
💁 The total stake is divided equally between all combinations. For each combination, multiply the odds of its selections. If every selection in a combination wins, it pays out its share of the stake multiplied by the combined odds. The total payout is the sum of the payouts from all combinations; subtract the total stake to find the profit or loss.
🙋 How many combinations are in a 2 out of 3 system?
💁 A “2 out of 3” system contains 3 combinations (accumulators with 2 selections): selections 1+2, selections 1+3, and selections 2+3. The stake is split into 3 equal parts.
🙋 When does a system give a better result than an accumulator?
💁 A system can give a better result when one or more selections lose. An accumulator then loses the entire stake, whereas a system may return some money or even make a profit if enough selections win. If all selections win, the accumulator gives a higher payout on the same total stake because the stake is not split between combinations.
🙋 What is the smallest system offered by bookmakers?
💁 The smallest system described here is “2 out of 3”. It requires at least 3 selections. Fonbet, Winline, and Liga Stavok offer this type. The maximum number of selections depends on the bookmaker and system type: Fonbet and Liga Stavok allow up to 16, while Winline lists systems with up to 20.
🙋 Does the bookmaker’s margin affect a system bet?
💁 Yes, the bookmaker’s margin affects each price in a system. Because the system consists of accumulators, the margin compounds within each combination. With comparable margins on individual selections, its effect grows as the number of selections in each accumulator (K) increases. You can assess the margin using the margin calculator.
